Sharps' dedication remembered by Lincoln County Fair Walking Horse Show

July 20, 2006|NANCY LEEDY

Danna and Ron Sharp were fixtures in the Lincoln County Fair Walking Horse Show for many years.

Whenever the annual event rolled around, Danna Sharp, who served as manager of the show for 10 years, and her husband, Ron, a committee member, were actively doing their part to help the show grow.

Both passed away this past year and, while they had dropped out of an active role with the horse show prior to their deaths, their service has not been forgotten. To honor their longtime dedication and their contributions, the Lincoln County Fair Walking Horse Show Committee memorialized the couple with the Danna and Ron Sharp Challenge Trophy.

The first Challenge Trophy was presented at the 63rd Annual Lincoln County Fair Walking Horse Show in the Open Amateur Walking Horse Specialty Class. The couple's granddaughter, Sara Burton, was on hand to present the trophy to Kat Man Dude, a horse ridden by Polly Ware, trained by Martin Stables and owned by Thomas Ware of Cynthiana.

With a Challenge Trophy, the silver tray that is presented is kept by the Fair Show committee and an alternate trophy is given the trainer of the winning horse. Should the same trainer win the trophy three years in a row, then it is retired and the silver tray changes hands.

"They (Danna and Ron Sharp) both put a lot of time and effort to try to make this show better," said longtime committee member Dan Grigson. "They would always try to get the horse people to come here. They were good at getting the horse people here and they contributed a lot."

In addition to her work with the Lincoln County Fair Walking Horse Show, Danna Sharp was also a member of the Kentucky Walking Horse Association's Ladies Auxiliary while Ron Sharp was heavily involved with the KWHA, serving as president at one time and on the board.

"The were very active in the horse show and they also owned some world champion and grand champion horses," Grigson said. "They loved their horses and they loved the work they did with the horse show."

The entire 63rd Annual Lincoln County Fair Walking Horse Show was dedicated to their memory and their years of service.

Twenty-eight different classes of 200 entries were offered up for judging in the horse show with Judge Grandy Tuck stepping up to rate each of the horses, some of the finest walking horses in the region and surrounding states.
