Cunningham drops out of Danville city commission race

August 13, 2006

George Cunningham has withdrawn from the Danville City Commission election. The former commissioner received 1,166 votes in the primary.

"My wife wanted me to and I realized to win I was going to have to go door-to-door and I was not willing to do that at this time," Cunningham said in a telephone interview Friday.

Voters will select four candidates in the Nov. 7 election. The remaining candidates are incumbents Terry Crowley and Kevin Caudill, along with Janet Hamner, Norma Gail Louis, Mike Orberson, Nathaniel Doneghy and Steve Becker. There are four spots available.

"I hate to let my supporters down, but I felt like at this time I should not continue," Cunningham said. "I think some people thought my age was a liability and maybe it is."
