Volleyball: Boyle beats Mercer

August 16, 2006

Boyle County bounced back from a subpar showing in its invitational tournament to beat Mercer County 25-15, 25-23 Tuesday night at Danville.

Host Boyle (2-6) controlled the first game but had to rally to overtake Mercer (5-4) in the second game to clinch the match.

"We fought back, which shows a lot of character," Boyle coach Dana Stigall said. "I'm very proud of how we played tonight. The girls really stepped up."

Boyle began the season 0-5 and went 1-5 in its Central Kentucky Kickoff Classic last weekend, but Stigall said this win is a good sign.

"I knew it would take a little bit of time, since this is a fairly new team, for them to start gelling and working together as a team, but they certainly did it tonight," she said. "That is a great steppingstone for us to go into the rest of the season."

Rori Middleton had three service aces, and Stigall said she played well as the primary setter in Boyle's retooled 5-1 offense. Brittany Moore had four kills in the first game and also had three aces, and Holly Carter added two aces.
