Meetings to be held on proposed Garrard substation

August 17, 2006|BOBBIE CURD

LANCASTER - East Kentucky Power Cooperative will hold two open houses this month to educate local residents about a proposed power line and substation in Garrard County.

Several residents have voiced concern over the property the company is considering for the substation.

The company has an option to buy a piece of property near the intersection of Ky. 52 and Boone's Creek Road but says it is still reviewing alternate corridors. The power line will run from the existing Lancaster substation on Buckeye Road to just west of the city.

Nick Comer, communications coordinator with EKPC, said new maps will be provided for land owners showing actual aerial photographs and maps of the alternate corridors that have been selected.

"We'll send out mailers first to the property owners who are in these regions," Comer said. "It's important for the land owners to come to the open house so that the employees on hand can collect information from them."

Design engineers, biologists and right-of-way agents from EKPC will be present during the open houses to gain additional information from land owners as well as discuss concerns.

Comer said property owners will have additional information that surveys may not have provided, such as locations of old cemeteries or other historically significant sites.

"These are things we cannot identify just by aerial photos, so we'll rely on the owners," Comer said.
