Benefit set to 'raise the roof' at old Middleburg school

August 22, 2006|BRENDA S. EDWARDS

MIDDLEBURG - A benefit concert featuring live bands, pickers and singers is planned in September to "raise the roof" at the old Middleburg school.

Proceeds will help construct a new roof on the building that recently was purchased from Casey County Board of Education by the Middleburg School Preservation Inc.

The event will be 2-7 p.m. Sept. 9 on the campus.

The concert will feature state Rep. Vernie McGaha and the Crossroads Quartet, The Canoe Creek Boys, Phillip Cochran, The 3 D's, Charissa Gosser and Mackenzie Campbell. Concessions also will be available.

"We hope to raise $10,000 for a new roof and septic tank," said Joberta Wells, chairman of the preservation group. "This is the first major fundraiser for the school that was obtained about two months ago."

"We hope the historical and educational contributions made by this wonderful school will not be forgotten by its alumni. We hope the former students will help us in our efforts to rejuvenate this grand old facility," Wells said.

She said roof leaks on the oldest building are in need of repairs and the septic tank needs to be installed. The old sewer treatment plant was closed because it will be cheaper in the long run to have a septic tank to take care of both buildings.

"The roof is our major concern. If we don't do something, there will be more damage," Wells said.

The school was built in 1936-37 and served elementary and high school students until 1963. The elementary school continued until December, when the students moved to the new Jones Park Elementary School west of Yosemite.

Wells said David H. Johnson is vice chairman of the preservation committee, Sandra Johnson Sears is secretary and Joy Tarter is treasurer.

Those who plan to attend the fundraiser are asked to bring lawn chairs or blankets.

Tickets are $5 for adults and free to children under 10. Contributions also will be accepted.

Sponsors are Farmers Deposit Bank, Casey County Bank, and Mike and Donald Durham.
