Harrodsburg graduates hold 45th reunion

August 28, 2006

HARRODSBURG - The 1961 Harrodsburg High School class graduated the same year that President John F. Kennedy was inaugurated, Alan B. Shepherd Jr. became the first astronaut to go into space, the wall went up between East and West Germany and the famous Barbie Doll got a boyfriend, Ken.

"We are still the Pioneers," was on front of the reunion program. Although the Harrodsburg and Mercer County schools merged this year, HHS' 1961 graduating class always will be Pioneers like the early settlers who came to Fort Harrod in the middle 1700s.

The HHS held its 45th reunion Aug. 4-6 with a host of events - dinner parties, a luncheon and gala - throughout the weekend. Sixty-one graduated from HHS in 1961.

Billie Bonta and Jerry Johnson hosted a dinner party at their home in Lexington to kick off the activities. A luncheon at Beaumont Inn on Saturday was followed by a tour of Harrodsburg High School and a dessert party hosted by Patricia Freeman Newby at her home on Cane Run Street. Carolyn Cole hosted a luncheon at her Herrington Lake residence to conclude the event Sunday when plans for the 50th reunion in 2011 were made.

David Huddleston, class member of Louisville, concluded the ceremony with prayer.
