Education system failing

August 30, 2006

Dear Editor,

As schools are back in session, I tend to wonder what they are going to teach the kids this year. In the past 10 years or more the education system has failed society by not teaching the kids the three basic things they will need in life. I've seen high school and some college graduates that can't add and subtract simple problems, can't read but on a sixth-grade level, and can't write words that can be read.

The kids don't know how to use their brains anymore. I see every day that young adults can't add 10+10 without using a calculator. I know that the teachers can only do so much, but let's be realistic, these kids are our future. They are not taught respect, responsibility and patience.

The great generation is fading fast and I fear that the generation that is approaching will not be able to handle the problems that will hit them in the face. To be honest about them is they are too lazy. They have no strong willpower to do anything constructive.

If the economy falls like it did in the 70s, it looks like their parents are going to have to carry them again. In schools they aren't taught basic skills they will need in order for them to survive. The big push now is to get them in college. Most of the time, they should be sent back to grade school. But those who make the decisions on what to teach these kids should see that the kids are not learning anything about life outside high school.

How about letting the teacher do what they were trained to do. Teach kids how to read and write first. Not all kids are going to college. No college degree is not the end of the world. You don't have to go to college to be smart. And you don't have to spend $50,000 to get a good job. Parents, don't push your kid to do something that you will regret later.
