LEXINGTON - The man suspected of robbing three area banks in one week was indicted by a federal grand jury Thursday.

Ricky Allen Pitman, 38, was charged with three counts of robbery, stemming from holdups May 18-24 at Danville, Lancaster and Nicholasville banks.

According to the indictment, Pittman is charged with stealing almost $20,000 after entering the banks, usually in a hat and sunglasses, and informing tellers he had a gun.

A warrant was issued for Pittman's arrest on May 28, but police were unable to find him after searching his Lexington home.

Kentucky State Police detectives had undergone a lengthy investigation into his whereabouts relating to the robberies, which occurred at Whitaker Bank in Lancaster, Farmers Bank in Peddlers Mall in Nicholasville, and Fort Knox Federal Credit Union in Danville.

Pittman was arrested June 8 after police received information that he was in the Elizabethtown area. He was arrested without incident by KSP, Elizabethtown Police Department, and members of the Hardin County Drug Task Force.

When testimony was heard in Pittman's case in June in Garrard District Court, KSP Detective Mark Young said Pittman's mother saw Pittman with a large amount of money and that he later told her he had robbed some banks.

Young also said in court that letters found on Pittman at his arrest indicated he robbed banks.

A week before Pittman was taken into custody, a relative of his appeared on a Lexington news station making a personal plea to Pittman to return home. She claimed Pittman allegedly told her he robbed the banks to support a drug habit.

If convicted, Pittman could face up to 20 years in prison.
