West takes long-awaited win

September 20, 2006|Abigail Laub

West sophomore Sidney Sisler threw her head back and lifted up her hands in disbelief after she scored with two minutes to go in a silent first half.

Sisler later laughed and said, "Yeah it was pretty far out," about her goal that was shot low and hard from almost midfield.

After two more goals coming in the second half — first from Ashley Cobane, second from Lesley Strong — sealed the deal for the visiting West Jessamine girls soccer team, 3-0, against the Lafayette Lady Generals.

It was yet another win for the team against Lexington schools in its quest to gain respect regionally.

"It was a big district game for us," coach DeAngelo Wiser said. "The kids were really focused. They understood what was on the table, with respect to the district."

Even though the girls of West's soccer team knew they hadn't defeated Lafayette in 14 years, Wiser said they kept their cool.

"These kids are fearless. They don't care who they play. They understand what's required," he said. "They don't have a pre-conceived notion, of 'Oh, better watch out for Lafayette.'"

For Sisler, the team's strategy was something they always work on.

"Just pick up your head, lift your feet, spread out the field, because it's so small," she said. "And just play hard."

West's team effort was well-balanced from attack to defense.

"We started passing the ball much better in the second half, and I think we just sort of took over there in the second half," Wiser said.

Brittany Harris and Courtney Peavler's presence in the midfield and on defense kept Lafayette far from the goal. And Tosha Boden's speed on the wings kept the soccer ball in West's possession.

"I'm just trying to get down the field," she said. "You just get down, you've got to have confidence."

The team faces the seven-time state champs, Oldham County on Sept. 13.
