Casey Apple Festival culinary, spelling bee winners named

LIBERTY - Results in the 2006 Apple Culinary Contest at the annual Casey County Apple Festival last weekend are:

Baking

Linda Buchanan was the overall winner in the baking division with an Apple Dapple Cake; and Rosa Bertram's entry of apple jelly was the overall winner in the canning and preservation division.

Others listed first, second and third place, respectively, if applicable, are:

Cake Class: Fresh Apple Cake, Linda Buchanan, Gina Goode and Chris Long.

Other Apple Cake: Audra Clements, senior division, Will Thompson, youth division.

Pie Class: Apple pie, scratch crust, Chris Long. Dried apple pie, scratch crust, Linda Buchanan, adult division; and Alyssa Davis, youth division. Dried apple pie, commercial crust, Donna Buis, and Versie Lawhorn, senior division.

Other Apple Pie: Alyssa Davis, youth.

Breads/Muffins Class: Apple loaf and apple muffins, Rosa Bertram, senior division.

Other Apple Bread: Allison Thompson, youth division.

Jelly, Butter, Preserves Class: Apple jelly, Rosa Bertram and Audra Clements, both senior division, and Janet Perry. Apple Butter: Chris Long, Janet Perry, and Audra Clements and Rosa Bertram, both senior division.

Canned/Dried Class: Canned apples, JoAnn McQueary, senior division. Apple sauce, Rosa Bertram, senior division.

Dried apples, Linda Buchanan and Nancy Hines, senior division.

Spelling Bee

Thirty-five students participated in the Apple Festival Spelling Bee. Winners listed by division, and first, second and third place, are:

First and second grade: Ashley Wilkerson, Phelps Elementary; Presley Atwood, Liberty Elementary; and Alyssa McKinney, Jones Park Elementary.

Third and fourth grade: Rebecca Sizemore, home school; Blake Durham, Jones Park Elementary; and Tiara Cochran, Douglas Elementary.

Fifth and sixth grade: Sarah Coffman, Jones Park Elementary; Zane East, Liberty Elementary; and Marcus Salyers, Jones Park Elementary.

Seventh grade: Kristopher T. Jones, Casey Middle School; Gabriel Martin, Galilean Christian Academy; and Sandy Tucker, Galilean Christian Academy.

Eighth grade: Bradley Myers, Casey Middle School; Regina Martin, Galilean Christian Academy; and Tyler Martin, Galilean Christian Academy.
