Autumn Fest will benefit Toys for Tots

HUSTONVILLE - Toys for Tots fundraising is getting a jump start this weekend in Hustonville.

Hustonville Fire Department and Ladies Auxiliary are hosting a kickoff event for the Toys for Tots season with Autumn Fest from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.

The city holds its own festival each summer, but Kim Simpson with Ladies Auxiliary, said this festival is separate from the city's, and is the first fall festival held by the fire department.

"It was just an idea where everybody can have fun," Simpson said. " a great idea for the whole community."

Gene Crowe, fire chief, said the fire department has held bake sales, car washes and asked for donations in the past for the charity. He said members of the fire department are excited about holding a new Toys for Tots fundraiser.

"The more money we generate, the more children we can make happy this Christmas," Crowe said. "This is the first time we have done this. Everybody is enthused."

Simpson said they don't have a set goal, and will appreciate any donation.

"Every dime made off it goes right to Toys for Tots," she said. "They can bring a new (unwrapped) toy. We're not turning anything down."

Tickets will be sold for opportunities to win items such as an iPod and gift certificates to O'Charley's, Cracker Barrel and Applebee's. Drawings will be held throughout the day. Also, awards will be given for the best painted or carved pumpkin and best costume or fall theme. Simpson said most food items and contest entry fees cost $1, and all event winners will receive prizes.
