Immanuel Baptist is now host church for Angel Food Ministries

September 29, 2006

Immanuel Baptist Church of Danville has become a host church for the Angel Food Ministries, a non-profit, non-denominational organization that provides "grocery relief" at discounted prices. The program based at Immanuel is to serve Boyle and Mercer counties.

The Angel Food Ministries monthly menu lists fresh and frozen foods, including meats, vegetables and desserts, that have a total average retail value of $70. But a box of food costs $25 a month and anyone, regardless of income, is able to purchase a box. In addition, specials are offered every month.

For example, the menu for October for $25 includes 10, 4-ounce beef and bean burritos; one 4-pound container of chicken thighs; one 1.5-pound pork roast; one 3-pound container of chicken tenders; one 1-pound container of cooked meatballs; one 2-pound container of chicken breast filets; one 7.8-ounce lasagna dinner; plus bean soup mix, pasta sauce, rice, potatoes, onions, pancake mix, breakfast cereal, eggs and a dessert item.

In addition, three specials are offered in October and each can be purchased for $18 (above the monthly $25 payment for the regular menu items). The specials are: four 8-ounce T-bone steaks and 2 pounds of breaded shrimp for an additional $18; one 10-pound box of corn dogs; and one 4.5-pound box of 16 four-ounce chicken breasts stuffed with ham and cheese for $18.

Generally, one unit of food would assist in feeding a single senior citizen for almost a month, and a family of four for abut one week. Angel Food Ministries says the food is "all of the same high quality one would purchase at a grocery store," adding that there are "no government-surplus commodities, no second-hand items, no dented cans without labels and no damaged or out-dated goods."

There is no limit to the number of units or bonus foods any individual can purchase and there are no applications or qualifications for program participants.

Food stamps accepted

In addition, Angel Food Ministries participates in the U.S Food Stamp program, and food stamps will be accepted as payment for the food.

Orders are made and payments will be collected at Immanuel during the first part of each month. However, program participants may place their orders by mail. Checks are to be made payable to Immanuel Baptist. Those program participants who will be using food stamps as payment may call the church to find out how and where those payments are to be made.

The orders then are submitted to Angel Food Ministries' main office in Monroe, Ga. The food will be delivered to Immanuel on the fourth Saturday of the month, and program participants will come to Immanuel to pick up their boxes. The church is located at 1280 Faulkner Lane, which is near the Boyle-Mercer line, between Burgin Road and U.S. 127.

For October, the cutoff for placing mail orders is Wednesday. Program participants are to pick up their October orders from 10 a.m. to noon on Oct. 21.

Anyone in Boyle and Mercer counties who wants to participate in the Angel Food Ministries program and wants to put their names on a list of participants or has questions may call Immanuel at (859) 236-5073 or visit the church's Web site at www.ibcsbc.org.
