Candidate forums approaching quickly

October 05, 2006|Mike Moore

I just wanted to give Jessamine Countians a quick update as to where we stand on the up coming candidate forums sponsored by The Jessamine Journal.

In nine days, the first of two forums will take place at West Jessamine High School.

The first forum on Oct. 14 will be for city offices. Both mayoral candidates have confirmed they'll be on hand, but to date, only five - Larry Allen, Johnny Collier, Chris Moore, Andy Williams, and John Martin - of the nine commission candidates have confirmed they'll be in attendance.

One candidate - Betty Black - declined the invitation due to a previous engagement she said she wasn't able to get out of.

That leaves Douglas Day, Roy Lamb and Danny Shearer who have not committed one way or the other.

As for the Oct. 21 forum, both Bob Damron and Lynn Fuller have committed to attend, Damron had a wedding reception to attend that day, but said in an e-mail the forums were a higher priority.

The sheriff, coroner, and jailer candidates have said they'll be in attendance.

District 2 magistrate incumbent Tim Vaughn has indicated he will be in attendance, but as of Wednesday, I haven't heard from challenger Lawrence Riley.

None of the constable candidates have contacted the Journal about the Oct. 21 forum.

The forums are for contested seats. Also on the ballot are offices for the city of Wilmore, but each incumbent is going unchallenged.

Other non-contested offices include the circuit clerk, property valuation administrator, county judge-executive, county attorney, county clerk, county surveyor, school board district 4 and 5, magistrate district 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6, constables district 1, 4, 5, and 6.

On the subject of elections, the Journal will accept letters to the editor supporting candidates until the Oct. 19 edition. It is the newspaper's policy to quit accepting those types of letters two weeks prior to the election.

The Oct. 14 and 21 candidate forums will be held in the auditorium of WJHS beginning at 6 p.m. both nights.

I hope every Jessamine Countian will make plans to attend these forums because the best way to make an informed decision is to be informed.
