Junior Brandon Gish scored the game-winning goal off a corner kick from Matt Kowaleski with less than six minutes to play here Sunday to give the Centre College men's soccer team a 2-1 victory over Oglethorpe University.

The win was the sixth straight for Centre (9-1) and improved the Colonels' record in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play to 4-0. Oglethorpe (7-3) dropped to 2-1 in SCAC play.

"This was a crucial conference game for us," said Centre coach Jeb Burch. "It was a hard-fought game with 26 fouls on Centre and 25 on Oglethorpe."

Centre scored first when junior Nick Judah tallied off an assist from senior David Horne less than three minutes into the match. "The game may have been too big for a free-flowing game," Burch said.

"We stuck with it and got the win. Kowaleski put in a free kick that Gish turned into a magnificent goal for his second-game winning goal of the year.

"We knew who won this game would be leading the race in the conference and my kids deserve credit for doing everything they could have done to win."

Centre plays at Elmhurst College Thursday to make up a match that was postponed earlier this year.
