If the truth comes from the mouth of babes, then Cooking for Awareness hit on something with this year's theme, Cooking with Kids. Cooking for Awareness is held each October as part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Danville Christian Academy's students are making spaghetti and meatballs for dozens of people expected at the potluck luncheon 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church on Main Street. As the students rolled meatballs they also learned about the problem of homelessness and the lack of affordable housing in Danville.

Willetta Fitzgerald, who works with Safe Connections, has a daughter at DCA, and she has been volunteering to teach a couple of classes about homelessness.

"We talked about how there are people in Danville who are homeless. ... The average homeless person here is not like the ones they see on TV," Fitzgerald said.

Homeless people here are just a paycheck away from living in their cars or someone else's couch.

Sierra Fitzgerald and Rachel Ditto said they wanted to help the homeless here by giving to charity, donating their unused stuff and inviting everyone to the luncheon to learn about the problem.

"We're making lunch to make people aware of the problem," Ditto said.

Sierra Fitzgerald said, "Come learn about the homeless. They need all the help we can get for them."
