Fire department's toy drive begins

October 26, 2006|Mike Moore

The Nicholasville Fire Department is embarking on its fourth annual toy drive to help underprivileged children in Jessamine County.

"We work with Blue Grass Community Action, Carolyn Cobb's group," Firefighter Jeremy Lowe said. "They come up with a list as far as who our needy kids are in the city and county."

Lowe added Community Action goes over the list to ensure those on the list are qualified for the program.

This year's drive has an added twist as the Nicholasville Presbyterian Church's handbell choir will perform in concert on Nov. 4 at Edgewood Baptist Church. All of the proceeds, Lowe said, will go toward the toy drive.

The concert will go from 4:30-6 p.m. at the church, which is located at 717 S. Main St. in Nicholasville.

In the past several years, the fire department has helped make Christmas special for about 300-400 children.

There are several drop off points for toys throughout Nicholasville, including The Jessamine Journal, Wal-Mart, city hall, Fast Pay Day Loans, and each of the three city's fire stations.

"We're just asking that they bring in a new unwrapped toy," Lowe said.
