About The Arts: Looking for a Blind Date

October 31, 2006|JENNIFER BRUMMETT

Actually, "Blind Date" won't be seen until, oh, the end of November-ish. "Blind Date" is the upcoming fourth release from local band Billyblues.

I understand this recording will have more of a blues rock sound to it. And, drummer David White, who played with Jerry Lee Lewis back in the day, is part of the sounds.

More on "Blind Date" when I know about it.

Looking through the inbox

OK, I'm clearing out the inbox for this week ... maybe ...

I'm on the new Trago Tequila's list, which delights me, actually. The feeler e-mail noted the "spectacular new packaging" for the newly-launched product - it's eye-catching and shiny - and the company's willingness to send samples for review.

No, I'm not remembering all of this; I still have the e-mail. Tequila is entertainment, right?

Oh, the temptation ...

Next up is one of the sporadic e-mails I get from the peops at Stuff magazine, which I've never read, but that's OK. This week, they're listing the scariest movies of all time. I only received a partial list, but the No. 1 spooky flick from Stuff? "The Exorcist."

That's a scary film, all right, but I've seen scarier. I tend to find flicks based on Stephen King novels problematic. I have issues with "Pet Sematary" and "It." Serious issues, the likes of which I never had with "Resident Evil" or "Nightmare on Elm Street."

But I did like "The Green Mile."

The last one - these are the arbitrary e-mails, not purposeful ones that I'll assemble into something coherent at a future date - is from the Percussion Marketing Council. In case you didn't know, November is International Drum Month. The release reads, "The growth of drumming as a fun, inclusive and healthy recreational activity is as explosive as, well, the music drummers are making. From high school drumlines, to fast hands competitions, to community drum circles and drum-and-fitness protocols, a growing number of people are discovering that drumming is more than a musical activity, it's a positive lifestyle choice."

So get your groove on - grab a bongo or a conga. It's good for you.

ArtsJournal.com

One place I like to go, time permitting, for views of arts and culture is Arts Journal.com. I get a weekly e-mail from this site that lists in a digest several blogs by arts and culture writers from across the country.

One of my favorites is CultureGrrl by Lee Rosenbaum; you can access it by logging on to www.arts journal.com/culturegrrl/. She's humorous, and her writing is sharp. I think she's a good read.

Another down-to-earth, generally compelling read is Martha Bayles' Serious Popcorn at www.artsjournal.com/popcorn/. She doesn't update very often, but when she does, it's definitely worth checking.
