Basketball: Centre women fall to Thomas More

November 19, 2006

Centre College fell behind early and couldn't catch Thomas More in a 58-45 loss Saturday in the championship game of the season-opening Country Hearth/Lee's Famous Recipe Classic at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Colonels shot just 37 percent from the field after going 7-for-25 in the second half.

Their starting lineup produced only 24 points, with three starters going scoreless.

Freshman Chelsea Goodman, one of four area high school graduates in the Colonels' freshman class and one of two who start, led Centre (1-1) in scoring for the second straight game.

The Mercer County High School graduate had 17 points on 7-for-8 shooting, matching her point total from the Colonels' 66-61 win over Spalding on Friday.

Thomas More (1-1) took the lead for good at 10-8 about 6 1/2 minutes into the game. The Saints led by as many as eight points in the first half before Centre pulled within 31-28 at halftime.

But the Colonels got no closer, and Thomas More's lead reached double figures about 7 1/2 minutes into the second half.

Monica Vonderbrink had eight points, and freshman and Lincoln County graduate Keonia Masterson came off the bench to lead Centre in rebounds for the second straight day with five.

The Colonels were outrebounded 39-26.

Centre shot just 39 percent in its win over Spalding, but the Colonels hit 10 of 24 3-point shots, led by Goodman, who was 3-for-6.

Lincoln County alumnus Jenny Jones and Mercer County grad Chrystal Claunch had eight points each.
