Stanford homes tour set for Sunday

STANFORD - Holiday decorations are going up everywhere. Sunday afternoon, five Stanford homes will open their doors to the public to showcase their holiday dcor.

The homes tour is being put on by the Stanford Homemaker's Club. It's an opportunity to see historic homes, mingle and possibly pick up some decorating tips and ideas.

Terri Arn, 1870 Ky. 198, finished her decorating Tuesday night. Nearly every room of her 200-year-old farmhouse is trimmed with lights, garland and ornaments. As the mother of twin sons, her taste in decorations is geared toward children.

She's been accumulating her decorations for years. A sled she rode as a child is draped with a strand of lights and garland and propped in the corner of her entryway. It is one of several items she adapted to serve as decorations. She also placed her kids' stuffed animals in an old trunk. Blankets hung on her walls look like they were created for Christmas.

"I try to look at things in a different way than normal use," she said. "I see something like a sled and add to it."

She describes her style as warm country. She said she likes the cozy feel to it. She thinks up some of her own ideas, and gets other ideas from magazines. She allows herself $100 a year for decorations.

Two of the three fireplaces in the old home have been opened up. Arn takes advantage of them for the holidays by trimming them with stockings, lights and garland.

This is Arn's first year to participate in the tour, and she said she is excited to welcome people into her home. "I've been looking forward to this for a year."

Irene Snow Jaggers also has been accumulating decorations for years. Six Christmas trees of various sizes and themes are spread throughout her home at 503 Danville Ave. She has trees with themes of snowmen, Victorian, University of Kentucky Wildcats and angels. In the kitchen, the tree has gingerbread men, a string of Life Savers and cookie cutters. A tree in her bedroom is covered in women's beauty essentials such as hair rollers, perfume bottles, mascara, eyeliner and hairbrushes.

"Every lady needs one of these," she said.

Jaggers said buying decorations throughout the year is a good idea. She doesn't recommend jumping on the decorating bandwagon.

"I don't think (people) should go out and buy something because it's the style that year," she said. "I like to use old things I've collected over the years."

She also uses a lot of fresh greenery, holly and magnolia. The homes tour organizers didn't have to convince Jaggers to decorate her home. She said she does it every year anyway.

Other homes on the tour include Forest Hills Antiques, 55 Hubble Road; Marilyn and Patrick Rice, 107 Edgewood Drive; and Dana and Steven Bullock, 620 Will Chancellor Road.
