December 03, 2006|LARRY VAUGHT

LEXINGTON - Music City Bowl officials confirmed tonight what has been suspected all week - Kentucky will play Clemson in the bowl Dec. 29th at 1 p.m. in Nashville.

"Our players, coaches and fans are thrilled to be going to the Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl," said Kentucky athletics director Mitch Barnhart. "Nashville is such a great city, and our fans have shown time and time again how much they enjoy visiting there.

"I'm so happy that all of the hard work and effort put forth by our football team is being rewarded appropriately. It is going to be a great matchup, and I'm sure the Big Blue Nation will descend upon Nashville in force to support the Wildcats."

This will be Kentucky's first bowl appearance since it played in the 1999 Music City Bowl when a then record crowd of 59,221 fans watched the game. The bowl will be televised on ESPN and is played at LP Field, home of the NFL's Tennessee Titans.

Kentucky finished the season 7-5 and won four of its last five games to earn the school's 11th bowl bid.

The last time Kentucky played Clemson was in the 1993 Peach Bowl when the Tigers won 14-13.

A pre-sale of tickets for UK season-ticket holders and K-Fund members has resulted in more the 20,000 ticket purchases.

Dale Polley, Music City Bowl chairman, looks forward to an exciting game.

"We're excited to host Clemson and Kentucky in this year's bowl," said Polley. "Tens of thousands of fans from across the Southeast will again visit Nashville on New Year's weekend."

Clemson is led by one of the nation's top running back duos, James Davis and C.J. Spiller. Davis and Spiller top the Atlantic Coast Conference's most prolific offense as the Tigers lead the conference in scoring, rushing offense and total offense.

The Tigers beat both Wake Forest and Georgia Tech, the two teams that played in the ACC title game. Despite losing three of their final four games, Clemson still finished the season 8-4.
