Jared Carter out for season

LEXINGTON - Kentucky sophomore center Jared Carter, who missed the first five games of the season with a dislocated right shoulder, re-injured that shoulder at a Thursday morning practice and will undergo season-ending surgery.

His recovery is expected to take six months and UK plans to seek a medical redshirt for the 7-foot-2 Carter, who is averaging only 2.3 rebounds and .3 points per game this year. He's played only 20 minutes in three games.

Carter originally dislocated his shoulder in mid-November. During five-on-five drills Thursday, Carter's shoulder was dislocated again while he battled for a rebound.

"I'm disappointed for Jared, because I know how hard he's worked,," UK coach Tubby Smith said. "But this will allow him plenty of time to heal from the surgery and strengthen those muscles before next season."

Carter had been opposed to redshirting last season when he averaged only 1.1 points, 1.4 rebounds and 5.1 minutes per game in the 17 games he played.

Carter told media members after Tuesday's game against Tennessee-Chattanooga that his shoulder felt "200 percent better" and that he was adjusting to wearing the brace necessary to protect his shoulder.

"I am getting back to where I should be," Carter said Tuesday. "I think I am on the verge of being ready to help the team a lot more."

Kentucky could add another player to the roster next week when signee Ramone Harris becomes eligible to join the team Dec. 16. Smith has been thinking of redshirting him since he is joining the team at midseason to retain four years of eligibility for Harris, a forward. However, Carter's season-ending injury could alter that thinking.
