Lancaster man jailed after high-speed chase in Boyle, Mercer

January 04, 2007|BRENDA S. EDWARDS

A Lancaster man was arrested today in Harrodsburg after leading police on a high-speed chase through Boyle and Mercer counties.

Mark Anthony Wren, 18, of 305 Richmond St., was finally arrested at 1:42 a.m. after crashing the maroon Oldsmobile Cutlass in the Bay West Paper Co. parking lot in Harrodsburg, police said.

Mercer County Deputy Sheriff Chris Edwards and Boyle County Deputy Sheriff Al Isaacs had to wrestle Wren to the ground, and Isaacs used a Taser gun to bring Wren under control before they could handcuff him. He was taken to the Boyle County Detention Center.

Edwards said luckily no one was injured nor were any police vehicles damaged as a result of the pursuit. However, the suspect's vehicle was damaged.

Isaacs began pursuing the car for speeding on Bluegrass Pike. The car turned onto U.S. 150 West where it reached speeds up to 120 mph, according to the officer's report.

After the vehicle crossed into Mercer County, officers there got behind it about 1:33 a.m. after being notified by Boyle County dispatch, according to a police report.

"As we came into the city limits, speeds were up to 100 miles per hour," Edwards said in his report.

When the vehicle turned on the wrong side of Industry Road, Edwards drove his cruiser beside Wren in an attempt to stop him. Wren sped on, though, and when his car went into a curve, it crashed.

Wren was charged in Mercer County with fleeing and evading police, first-degree wanton endangerment, criminal mischief, no driver's license, reckless driving, and no seat belt.

He is accused of refusing to stop his vehicle for police, attempting to ram his vehicle into Isaacs' cruiser, causing more than $1,000 in damage to Bay West's property, and driving on the wrong side of Industry Road.

Isaacs charged Wren with speeding, fleeing or evading police, reckless driving, two counts of wanton endangerment, no insurance, no seat belt, and failure to register the transfer of a vehicle.

The car was registered to an automobile sales business in Berea.
