Basketball: Nestheide leads Centre past Oglethorpe

January 07, 2007

Behind a game-high 26 points from junior Matt Nestheide, the Centre College men won their fifth straight game Friday, beating host Oglethorpe 76-57 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference game at Atlanta.

"This was the best game we've played all year," Centre coach Greg Mason said.

"We only had 11 turnovers. They pressed us the whole game, and the guys did a good job of handling the ball."

Nestheide was 10-for-16 from the field, getting 18 in the first half for the Colonels (9-3, 1-1 SCAC). John Patterson had 12 points with seven rebounds and four blocks.

Oglethorpe (6-4, 0-2), which came in averaging 87 points a game, finished the game 22-for-58 from the field for 38 percent, and 30 points below its average.

"T.C. Thomason had a great defensive game. He held Eric Dickinson to four points, and he had been averaging 19 a game," Mason said. "And Nestheide, Thomas Britt and Ryan Crowdis did a great job on their perimeter guys."

Centre led 43-29 at the half, and stretched its lead to as many as 23 points in the second half. Centre shot 30-for-59 Friday, making seven of 22 3-pointers.

Matt Jacobson added nine points, five rebounds and three assists. The Centre men and women play at Sewanee today.

Women

Oglethorpe 71, Centre 50 - At Atlanta, Centre (3-7, 0-2) trailed by just two points at the half, but shot just 26 percent (8-for-30) in the second half in a loss to Oglethorpe (9-4, 1-1).

"We just came out and had a tough shooting second half. We were 0-for-13 from 3-point range, which hurt us a lot because we had been scoring a lot of points behind the arc," Centre coach Wendie Austin-Robinson said. "We played a great first half, but it was a bad shooting second half. We were worn down by Oglethorpe in the second half."

Chelsea Goodman had nine points and four rebounds, Jenny Jones had eight points and Keonia Masterson had eight points and nine rebounds for Centre.

Centre led 11-5, which was the biggest lead by either team in the first half. The Stormy Petrels led 34-30 with three minutes left in the first half, but Goodman's layup at the buzzer made it a 34-32 game. Oglethorpe outscored Centre 35-6 to open the second half and led 59-38 with 7 minutes remaining.
