People ignored by election board

January 18, 2007

Dear Editor,

I am writing in reference to the precinct change. We tried to get our precinct changed back to the Mount Freeman Church. Our precinct is West Junction City. The precinct consists of the following area: Starting west of Junction City limits to White Oak Road, Forkland Road, Reynolds Branch, Worlds Town Road, Phillips Lane, Hogue Hollow Road, Nosco Road, Rosel Road, Dye Hollow, Oscar Johnson Road, Alum Springs and Cream Ridge.

After hearing so many complaints about the precinct changes, I initiated a petition - went door-to-door obtaining signatures from citizens in our community. I was able to secure 204 signatures before health problems and not being able to catch people at home forced me to give up this endeavor.

At this time I turned the petition over to the election board. I was told that the precinct would stand as is. I have worked in a lot of elections and always thought the people came first; however, it appears to me that the election board and the county clerk are doing what is best and most convenient for them.

Maybe we should take some lessons from the Mitchellsburg precinct - How is it that they were able to retain their precinct? - what is fair for one should be fair for all. I know a lot of the people in the county have the same problem and would like to see this decision reversed.

I don't know what the answer is or how to get this decision turned around, but I think the people should have a say. The elected officials are there to serve the public - not the other way around. I would like to take this opportunity to apologize to the people who signed the petition - I feel that the people have been completely ignored!
