Current events, age-old topics among top-selling Christian-oriented books

With the recent end of 2006, various publications have compiled their "top 10" lists for the year. And that includes Christian book and music stores and the sales of books, CDs and DVDs.

But before he got into the top sellers last year at the Danville Christan Bookstore and Music Center, owner and manager Dan McClelland wanted to predict a blockbuster for 2007.

"The movie, 'Facing the Giants,' had done tremendous business in the theaters where it was being shown at the end of the year and the new year, and it will soon be coming out in DVD," McClelland said. "We already are making reserved, pre-release sales on the DVD."

The movie should have particular appeal in this high school football-crazy area, which is home to perennial football powers Danville and Boyle County high schools and new state gridiron champion Mercer County, McClelland said.

"The movie is about a struggling high school football coach, and I can't think of any area anywhere where high school football is so popular than here in 'Title Town' here in Danville and Boyle County and now over in 'Titan Town'in Mercer County."

McClelland then proceeded to reveal some of the top-selling books over the past several months.

In the area of current events, he said that the big books have included "Jerusalem Countdown" by John Haggy, "The Last Jihad" by Joel Rosenberg and "Blue Like Jazz" by Donald Miller.

Other top-sellers have included books about heaven and hell, and McCelland said those include "Heaven" by Randy Alcorn, "90 Minutes in Heaven" by Don Piper and "23 Minutes in Hell" by Bill Weise.

Books about relationships also have been popular, and the best-seller among those has been "Five Love Languages" by Gary Smalley, he said.

Fiction favorites have included "Battlefield of the Mind" by Joyce Meyer and practically anything written by Karen Kingsburg especially books from her "Redemption" and "First Born" series, said McClelland.

On the music scene, top-selling songs have included "Lifesong" by the Casting Crowns, "Glory Train," by Randy Travis. "Wherever You Are" by Third Day and "Nothing Is Sound" by Switchfoot.

And, as in past years, some of the biggest sellers have been songs from the "Gaither Homecoming Series" of live concerts featuring Southern gospel music.
