Lady Colts top Estill County

After sitting out due to a knee injury since Christmas break West Jessamine seniorforward Katie Bailey helped her team defeat Estill County at home Monday, 48-44.

"Our offensive output was much, much better than it has been,"West coach Deron Norman said. "The first half was alright, but second half the girls played exceptionally well."

He added, "Katie's doing well. I'd say she's about 60 percent. She's getting minutes here and there. If she's on the court we're going to get something on her."

Following a close game, in which West led by one point at the half, junior forward Rachel Birch hit a shot with 50 seconds to go in the fourth quarter to seal the deal. Junior guard Samantha Shipley, who finished with 12 points, capped off the win with two free throws. Juniorguard Lauren Lamar led West with 13 points.

Other West stats: Molly Knight 11, Abby Baxter 8, Rachel Birch 4.

The win followed a Friday home loss to Mercer County, 46-43.

"The Mercer game was really close all the way through,"Norman said."We had a chance to win it. They hit a three at the last second and we ran several plays at the end, but just couldn't get it."

The second quarter cost the Lady Colts big, as Mercer outscored them 16-6, and no one from West scored in the double digits the entire game. Knight and Birch each finished with 9, Shipley 7, Woosley, Baxter and Lamar all had 5, and Bailey had 3 points.

"We really haven't had a night all season long where everyone was hot at once," Norman said. "We've gotten good shots, they just haven't fallen."

West, now 5-14, play again home Saturday against McCreary Central at 3:30 p.m.

"We're going to go out every night and try to compete with people," Norman said. "They have the goal in mind, that we want to make it to region this year, and I think we're very capable of doing that."
