Boyle grad Sgt. Justin Clarkson receives military honor

Sgt. Justin Clarkson, a 1996 graduate of Boyle County High School, has been awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with a Combat "V" distinguishing valor. He is serving his third consecutive combat tour in Iraq,

Clarkson is the son of Lanie and Jerry Powell of Stanford and Billy and Marsha Clarkson of Glasgow. He deployed in September and is expected home in April.

He is a platoon sergeant and a vehicle commander of a LAV-25 assault vehicle with 2D Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion based in Camp Lejeune, N.C.

His platoon's mission has been to search and clear improvised explosive devices and insurgent activity along main supply routes through the Al Anbar Providence in Iraq.

Clarkson also served in the Battle of Fallujah in 2004 while in Iraq and a 1999 combat tour in Kosovo.

He has received orders for a special duty assignment as a Marine Corps recruiter upon his return.
