March 30, 2007

The Winchester Music Club, an affiliate of the National Federation of Music Clubs and the Kentucky Federation of Music Clubs, met Tuesday, March 27, at the home of Dr. William Cooper. President Mrs. William Blakeman presided over the business session. Mrs. Ruth Westerfield gave the background for the writing of the hymn of the month, "I Am Bound for the Promised Land." The group sang the hymn, accompanied by Dr. Cooper on the piano.

The program, Music Box Melodies, was sponsored by Blakeman, who gave a history of the origin and evolution of music boxes. Members brought their collection of music boxes for display.

Several songs were sung and played as examples of melodies found on the boxes. Mrs. Opal Gravett and Mrs. Virginia Baker played a piano duet, "Music Box Dancer," by Frank Mills.

Members sang "Bless This House," by Helen Taylor and Mary E. Brahe; "Brahms Lullaby," by Johannes Brahms; "It's A Small World," by Richard and Robert Sherman, accompanied by Mrs. Robert Pace on the piano. Blakeman played "Fur Elise," by Ludwig von Beethoven. Pace and Blakeman played a piano duet, "Theme from Love Story," by Francis Lai.
