The George Rogers Clark High baseball team completed the first week of the season with a 9-2 win over Madison Southern on Thursday at Cardinal Field.

The Cardinals (2-0) picked up a dose of momentum before heading to Panama City (Fla.) on Saturday.

"It's always good to win," Clark coach Larry Allison said. "We're still in that spring training mode. Hopefully we'll have a good trip, get some innings in and some good workouts, especially with the kids who played basketball."

Clark banged out seven hits, led by Lance Rose, who connected on a two-run home run in the fifth. Rose's dinger drove in Jeremy Greene, who reached base with a walk.

Allison wasn't surprised by Rose's homer.

"He's got some pop," he said.

Clark scored two runs in the second on a RBI double by Brandon Mitchell, who later scored on a groundout by Tim Duvall.

The Cards put the game away by crossing the plate four times in the fourth frame. Pinch-hitter Logan McQuerry, a seventh-grader, highlighted the inning with a bases-loaded single that scored a pair of runs.

Cody Christopher and John Turner each had a double.

Three Clark pitchers combined on a five-hitter and seven strikeouts. Rose started and pitched the first three innings and fanned four batters in the process.

"The key was he didn't walk anybody," Allison said.

Greene pitched two innings, while Christopher tossed the final two innings. Greene fanned three batters and gave up one hit, while Christopher gave up both of Southern's runs and issued four walks.

The Eagles fell to 0-2 with the loss.
