Casey jail making money

April 03, 2007|BRENDA S. EDWARDS

LIBERTY - The $3.7 million Casey County Detention Center budget was presented Monday for Fiscal Court to review before it is incorporated into the total county budget for the 2007-2008 fiscal year.

Jailer Tommy Miller expects to have $573,000 carryover to transfer into the new budget.

The document shows the largest chunk of money, $2.5 million, comes from housing Class D felons.

The jail also expects to get $600,000 from intercounty prisoner contracts, and $375,000 from controlled intake.

The remainder of the funds come from parole violators, jail operation allotment, court costs, DUI service fees, work release and other fees. Another $80,000 comes from inmate telephone use.

The actual jail operations budget is $1.8 million. Other money is for the $491,000 on bonds, $525,000 for principal on borrowed money and $290,000 for benefits for 46 employees.

Miller said routine medical costs are up some this year but he expects them to even out and be less than last year. Food costs also went up due to the extra prisoners in the new jail addition and a renovated visiting area for more beds.

He also added two staff members and gave other employees a cost of living raise. The the remainder of the expenditures are about the same.

Custodial supplies also will be increased since the jail has added 75 more beds, Miller said.

The jail currently has 269 beds for inmates.
