April 03, 2007

PANAMA CITY, Fla. - The George Rogers Clark High School baseball team opened play in the Panama City Invitational on Monday with a 9-8 win over Coral Gables.

"They were one of those teams that you see all of the time down here all of the time," Clark coach Larry Allison said this morning. "They were very good and they didn't make many mistakes. For us to (beat them) it was a feather in our cap. Our kids competed all day long."

The Cardinals got a solid outing from starter Jeremy Greene, who pitched six innings, giving up five runs on eight hits. Greene recorded three strikeouts before giving way to Cody Christopher in the seventh inning.

Christopher gave up three runs - one earned - and got the big out with a strikeout to end the game with the tying run at second base.

Evan Bennett led the Cards' offensive output with three hits in four attempts at the plate. Christopher and Josh Wood followed with two hits apiece. Patrick Bailey also added a pair of hits, including a two-bagger.

Clark had a breakthrough inning in the fourth, scoring five runs on seven hits - all singles.

The Cards tacked on two more runs in the sixth, highlighted by a double by Christopher that reached the fence.

"The fences down here are huge," Allison said. "He hit it off the fence in right center field."
