High school could lower expectations in principal search

April 05, 2007|ASHLEY HOOKER

Members of the Lincoln County High School Site-Based Decision Making Council have been unable to find what they consider to be a qualified applicant for the school's vacant principal position.

"None of the applicants fit all of the criteria that has been set," said Lincoln County Schools Superintendent Teresa Wallace.

The position has been vacant since Jan. 2, when former principal Ty Howard took an administrative post with the school district.

Wallace said six applications were reviewed at the council's meeting in late March, but none met the criteria set forth early in the search by the council.

The criteria include five years' experience as an administrator. None of the six applicants came close to that kind of experience, Wallace said.

"We're thinking that the problem could be the time of year. Qualified people could be committed to other schools," she said.

The next step in the process is to repost the job for another 30 days, and review new applicants after that time period is up.

"If we don't find anyone this time, we'll have to back up on the criteria, which we don't want to do," Wallace said. "We feel that experience and being an instructional leader are too important to the job."

For now, Assistant Principal Wes Cornett and three interim principals, Tom Brown, Tim Whitis and Delmar Warren, share the responsibility until a permanent principal is hired.

Wallace remains hopeful about the search.

"The next 30 days will be closer to the end of the school year, when more qualified people will be free to apply. We're going to keep our fingers crossed."
