Harrodsburg to annex and rezone 165 acres

April 11, 2007

HARRODSBURG - The local zoning board is rezoning 165 acres of land Harrodsburg plans to annex.

The property is zoned agricultural, but agricultural land cannot be part of the city, so it is up to the Greater Harrodsburg/Mercer County Planning and Zoning Commission to assign zoning. The Harrodsburg City Commission has given first reading to the annexation of the property that runs from Warwick Road and the bypass to Anderson-Dean Community Park.

The land belongs to the Dean family, Earl and Louise Ransdell, and Todd and Martha Warner. City Administrative Officer Ed Music said Tuesday the package was presented to the city by a Lexington Realtor. Neither he nor Shawn Moore, executive director of the zoning panel, could recall his name.

The city was approached by the Realtor, Music said, and the property owners all agreed to have their property annexed. No one would say for the record why property owners wanted their property annexed.

Some of the Deans' property on U.S. 127 already is zoned commercial. The properties are on the north side of the bypass and the highway.

Martha Warner was the only property owner to speak about the issue during a public hearing at the zoning panel's meeting Monday evening, and she had no objection.

"I'm indifferent to all of this," said Warner, often a critic of the zoning panel in the past. She said her husband had approved the plan.

Like the rezoning of 380 acres to the south of the city just a little more than a year ago, property owners who want to continue farming their land can do so. However, if they want to sell it for development, they're free to do that, too.

A plat showing the property reflects the new zoning. For the most part, the northern sections of the properties will be zoned R-1, the most stringent of the residential zones.

The rest of the property will be zoned B-2, general business. Some of the property crosses the bypass to the inner loop.
