Clark students work on Youth Service Day projects

April 23, 2007|Samieh Shalash

As weekend activities go, there wasn't much glamour to what 100 local youth did Saturday. But there was satisfaction. The students washed windows, planted trees and flowers, pulled weeds and painted railings at George Rogers Clark High School. All in the name of Youth Service Day, a national movement to get young people involved in their communities.

"It was a huge success," said Linda Long, Community Education Youth Service Day volunteer coordinator. The landscaping and spring cleaning projects were directed by the GRC National Honor Society and Junior ROTC.

The cleanup at GRC was one of many ongoing youth service projects in Clark. Others include 4-H members sending care packages to Iraq, Clark Middle School Junior Civitan members making baby blankets for the AAA Pregnancy Center, and Clark Middle students recycling newspapers.

This is the second year Regional Youth Service Day was recognized in Clark County. The event was funded completely by donations from the community.
