Mercer's Chase Wofford to sign with Berea

April 24, 2007|HAL MORRIS

HARRODSBURG - Chase Wofford said Berea College gave him the personal touch he wanted.

That is one of the main reasons why the Mercer County senior has decided to sign to play his college basketball at Berea today.

"Just the fact that the whole season, they've been in contact with me. Their head coach (John Mills) took time to call me," Wofford said. "Just personal calls to see how we were doing."

Wofford chose Berea over Manchester (Ind.) College. Berea was 13-17 last year, including 3-6 in the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Now that he has his college choice out of the way, Wofford said he can enjoy the final weeks of his high school career.

"It feels good because all the heavy stuff is off now. I can just sit back and relax," he said.

Wofford earned All-Area honors for the second-straight year last season after leading Mercer in scoring (17.3 points per game) and rebounding (9.3 per game). He had 42 blocked shots and 31 steals for the Titans, who finished 17-12 in the first year as a merged program under Nelson Cundiff.

At Harrodsburg and Mercer, Wofford was one of the most dominant inside players in the area.

But at just 6-2, Wofford knows he'll have to step out on the floor more in college.

Working on outside game

"I won't be tall enough to play just inside, but I know I may have to some," he said.

And while he basically just patrolled the inside in high school, Wofford said he's been working a lot on his outside game.

"I've been staying after school and practicing. I'm learning to face the basket and working on my dribbling and jump shot," he said.

Wofford, who admits he never was a big weight lifter, has also been working on getting stronger. He knows he has to do if he wants to see much playing time as a freshman at Berea.

"I'm hoping to see some time, but I know I have to get a lot stronger," he said. "Never having lifted much, I have to also make sure I keep my stamina up. But I'm anxious to get going."
