Clark joblessness rose in February

Jobless rates rose half a percent between January and February but remain below levels recorded during the same time last year.

According to recent figures from the Kentucky Office of Employment and Training in the Education Cabinet, unemployment in Clark County rose from 5.7 percent in January to 6.4 percent in February. It was 7.1 percent in February last year.

Out of a civilian labor force of 17,701 workers, 16,562 were employed, according to the cabinet.

Meanwhile, unemployment rates dropped in 74 Kentucky counties between February 2006 and February 2007, rose in 40 counties and remained the same in six counties.

In the Bluegrass region, which includes Clark County, unemployment rates (compared to the previous month's) were: Anderson 8 percent (5.5 percent in January); Bourbon 5.7 (5.1); Boyle 7.4 (6.8); Estill 9 (8); Fayette 4.7 (4.2); Franklin 5.5 (5.1); Garrard 7.2 (6.6); Harrison 6.4 (5.7); Jessamine 5.6 (5); Lincoln 9 (8.3); Madison 5.6 (4.9); Mercer 7.5 (6.2); Nicholas 8.5 (6.7); Powell 9.5 (8.7); Scott 5.4 (4.9), and Woodford 4.7 (4).

Woodford and Fayette counties recorded the lowest jobless rates in the commonwealth. Other counties with low unemployment rates were Oldham County, 5.2 percent; Warren County, 5.3 percent; Boone, Kenton and Scott counties, 5.4 percent each; Shelby and Franklin counties, 5.5 percent each; and Campbell, Jessamine and Madison counties, 5.6 percent each.

Jackson County recorded the state's highest unemployment rate - 16 percent. It was followed by Wolfe County, 14.7 percent; Clay County, 14.5 percent; Magoffin County, 14 percent; Morgan County, 12.9 percent; Owsley County, 12.7 percent; McCreary County, 12.1 percent; Menifee County, 11.6 percent; Lewis County, 11.5 percent; and Bath County, 11.1 percent.
