AUTO INSURANCE LEGISLATION NEEDED

To the Sun:

Between Feb. 12 and April 10 of this year there were 113 individuals either charged or fined in Clark County for driving without insurance. Fines for this misdemeanor range as high as $635.00.

If you are in an auto accident with an individual who is without insurance, you and your own insurance company will wind up footing the bills.

Apparently, insurance companies are required to notify county clerks when the coverage of an individual is allowed to lapse, and one would assume that at some point local law enforcement would be able to curtail the driving privileges of that individual.

And clerks are supposed to be asking for proof of insurance when people renew their vehicle licenses. Unfortunately, there are auto insurers who deal with extremely short-term premium periods so it's ludicrously easy for a person to buy coverage for a couple of weeks - long enough to get their tags renewed - and then allow coverage to lapse.

However, the system is breaking down somewhere; otherwise there would not be so many being charged for not having insurance. And considering the number who are caught, imagine how many are actually driving without coverage and are not being caught!

Maybe it's time for our legislature to quit dealing with so many superfluous issues every time it meets and do something to put some teeth into the current law and get these miscreants off our streets and roads.

VETS OFFER SYMPATHY TO CLEAVER'S FAMILY

To the Sun:

On behalf of the Clark County Veterans Council as well as Clark County veterans groups and veterans, we express our sincere sympathy to the family of Dr. Becke Cleaver upon her passing. Dr. Cleaver will be missed. She was an educational leader and scholar who affected countless young lives.

We write to commend her leadership and hard work in organizing Veterans Day activities in which veterans of all eras were honored and provided a meal. The programs were very well attended by community veterans and were a wonderful educational experience for the entire student body at Conkwright Middle School.

Becke's efforts to honor Clark County veterans were greatly appreciated. We hope that a portion of her legacy would be to continue those efforts.

Sincerely,

Ed Burtner
