Randolph Morris to play with UK seniors tonight

April 27, 2007|LARRY VAUGHT

Kentucky seniors Bobby Perry, Sheray Thomas and Lukasz Obrzut will have a special team member with them tonight when they play an exhibition game at Mercer County.

Former UK player Randolph Morris, who signed with the New York Knicks after the 2006-2007 season ended, is scheduled to be at tonight's game.

"I just talked to Bobby Perry, and he said Randolph would be there with them about 6:30 to pose for pictures and play in the game," said Mercer boys basketball coach Nelson Cundiff. "We are really looking forward to having all of them, but having Randolph Morris only adds to the excitement."

Morris signed a $1.6 million, two-year contract with the Knicks just after former UK coach Tubby Smith resigned and played the final month of the NBA season. Since the Knicks are not in the playoffs, Morris is back in Lexington now and has agreed to play in the exhibition game.

All the players are scheduled to be available for photos (for a fee) in the Mercer foyer before the game. The game is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. Players will sign autographs after the game.

Mercer athletics director Terry Yeast says he is not sure exactly who will play for the Harrodsburg and Mercer alumni team, but he has heard that former Harrodsburg stars Dennis Johnson and Julius Yeast will be on the roster along with former Mercer standout Joe White.

Tickets for the game are $10.

"We are going to have some raffles, including one with Little Caesar's where you could win pizza for a year," Cundiff said. "We hope to have some shooting contests between the fans and UK players.

"We are expecting a good turnout. We will split the gate with the UK players, so they are helping out Mercer County basketball. It's a nice tribute to them and a good way for fans to say good-bye to these guys."

Legion official

Kentucky officials confirmed on Thursday that Parade All-American guard Alex Legion of Detroit had signed with the Wildcats.

"I'm excited Alex is joining us at Kentucky," Kentucky coach Billy Gillispie said in a statement released by UK. "He's a guy I'm looking forward to having the opportunity to coach. In addition to being an outstanding young man, he's a really good shooter and scorer, and because of those attributes he fits in well with our returning players.

"One of the best things that happened during the process of recruiting Alex was that our current players did a great job of encouraging him to come to UK.

"They are working as hard as the coaching staff is at trying to improve our roster. All of the guys displayed the team-first attitude that is an important part of any successful program."

As a senior at Oak Hill Academy, Legion averaged 19.6 points, 5.7 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.8 steals per game while shooting 53 percent from the field, 42 percent from 3-point range and 85 percent from the free throw line. He also made his last 40 free throw attempts.

Prior to his senior season at Oak Hill, Legion attended Detroit Country Day where he led the Yellowjackets to a 55-13 record.

Other former UK players from Oak Hill were Jules Camara, Rashaad Carruth, Cliff Hawkins, Ron Mercer and Rajon Rondo

UK signed Jacksonville, Fla., forward A.J. Stewart and Alexandria, Va., center Mike Williams in the fall.

"Our staff continues to work feverishly on finishing up this signing class and getting ready for next season and beyond," Gillispie said.
