May 14, 2007

The Danville -Boyle County community will honor veterans and active duty soldiers on Saturday.

The celebration begins downtown on Saturday morning with a flag raising ceremony and parade. Festivities continue at the Boyle County Fairgrounds as the community dedicates the new tank and Veterans Memorial.

Former Miss America Heather French Henry, a veterans' advocate, will serve as grand marshall of the parade and honorary dignitary at the dedication for the Boyle County Veterans Memorial.

Event Coordinator Jack Hendricks said, "We have tried for five years to get on the calendar of Heather French Henry and we are pleased that she is able to attend our event this year. The dedication of the tank is such a significant occasion for our community."

Several fly-overs are planned during the parade and dedication, including Apache and Black Hawk helicopters and a Russian aircraft, said Julie Wagner, executive director of Heart of Danville.

Children's activities at the fairground include an obstacle course, model airplane, rock climbing wall, laser shooting range where kids can fire a real M-16 and free, custom-made dog tags compliments of the National Guard.
