Tips From The Pro: Hogan's book still the best

May 15, 2007|BRUCE BROWN

I am often asked if there are any PGA Tour players that I try to get my students to emulate or watch.

Oddly enough, I still believe that the simplicity and knowledge of Ben Hogan offers the most valuable information for novice and excellent players alike. Hogan has many books and literature available that explains the game of golf beginning with the grip and proceeding through the entire swing.

I feel as though one of the best instruction books on the subject of golf would be "Hogan's 5 Lessons." This book covers every aspect of the swing. I encourage all golfers to purchase this book and begin to educate yourself regarding the golf swing.

Centre golf

The Centre College golf teams ended their seasons recently, and the future looks promising for the Colonels because they do not lose a golfer off either the men's or women's teams. Recruiting went extremely well during the past year, too, as nine golfers plan to join Centre in the fall.

The Centre women were fifth this year in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship. That was their best finish ever in conference play.

The women also ended the year ranked 49th in NCAA Division III - the first time a Centre women's team has been ranked at the end of a season.

The team's triumph in the Rhodes Spring Invitational in Memphis was a tremendous triumph that let the conference know that Centre golf is a threat to compete for the championship in future years.

This year's team was led by freshman Katie McKenna, who had an 88 tournament average. McKenna also earned all-conference honors.

Other top team members were junior Melanie Goff (captain), freshman Marissa Cianchetti, sophomore Lindsay Mauer and sophomore Andrea Bishop.

Centre's men also finished fifth in the conference tournament. They were ranked 29th in Division III and ninth in the South Region. That is the team's highest ranking in the last 20 years.

The team was led by freshman Tyler Current, who had an average tournament score of 77. Co-captain Rus Whalen had a 78 average, sophomore Tyler Griffith 78, freshman Mike Janok 79, and junior Derek Tingle 79.

Griffith was named to the all-conference team.
