Dear Editor,
I read today that consumer confidence dropped last month in neighboring Tennessee and I'm not surprised. With prices nearing three dollars a gallon - again - it seems to me this will become more of a drag on family budgets.
I live in Lexington and keep a close eye on our family budget. That's why I did some research into what makes gas so expensive. I found out that the government mandates refineries produce a different blend for summer driving. That blend is more costly because of the make-up of the blend and how it releases vapors in warmer weather. I also found out that ethanol, which is being used more and more to address environmental concerns, is more expensive to produce and less efficient than gasoline.
I wish the government would stop mandating blends that cost more for the average family. There has to be a way to incorporate better technology to make the gasoline less expensive and still environmentally friendly. That's what we need our elected leaders to work on.
