Rabies vaccination clinics set for Garrard County

May 17, 2007

LANCASTER - The 2007 rabies vaccination clinics sponsored by the Garrard County Health Department and local veterinarians will be held on the following dates: 1-3 p.m. June 2 at Camp Dick Elementary; 6-8 p.m. June 5 at Paint Lick Elementary; 6-8 p.m. June 7 at Buckeye Fire Department; and 12-2 p.m. June 9 at Garrard County High School.

Cost for the rabies vaccination will be $5. Other vaccination will be available upon request.

Rabies is an infectious viral disease that affects the nervous system of humans and other mammals. As of July 15, 2004, the rabies control portion of Kentucky Revised Statue 258 states that cats and ferrets in addition to dogs shall be vaccinated against the rabies virus. As of this date, there have been six positive rabies cases in the state of Kentucky (three unvaccinated dogs, a horse, bat and skunk). The positive case for the skunk was in Garrard County. Pets occasionally can come into contact with wild animals, so it's important that dogs, cats and ferrets are vaccinated.
