Letter: Don't corrupt Sunday

May 27, 2007

Dear Editor,

The issue of Sunday sales of alcohol has been interesting to watch. In talking with fellow pastors, the use or non use of alcohol for both social and liturgical reasons is varied. Consensus on that matter will never happen. I do not use alcohol socially or for liturgical purposes within my congregation.

Yet, a key reason that I do not support the availability of alcohol for sale on Sunday is religious matter. It has little to do whether alcoholic beverages are right or wrong, but that Sunday is a holy day for people who practice the faith of Christianity. The day of honoring God and to also rest was set aside as being different from every other day. As we have slowly degraded and debased the holiness of the Christian Sabbath and keeping it holy, this is simply one more step to corrupt the day that should be different than all other days.

I would request that the City Commission remember the intent of why God separated this day from all other days. And though this day has been corrupted by human beings for greed and convenience, we should not add to its deterioration by the buying and selling of alcoholic beverages, which can be done every other day of the week.
