LANCASTER - The Secretary of State's Office released recanvass results Thursday in the Republican primary for state treasurer. State Rep. Lonnie Napier, R-Lancaster, requested the recanvass after he lost to Melinda Wheeler by a reported 1,114 votes - .7 of a percent margin.

Although the recanvass did show some discrepancies across 12 counties, Napier still lost to Wheeler by 1,112 votes, two votes less than originally reported. The race had four Republican candidates.

According to Less Fugate, communications director with Secretary of State Trey Grayson's office, the counties that reported a difference in tallies are Adair, Boyd, Bullitt, Clinton, Jackson, Johnson, Laurel, Magoffin, Martin, Oldham, Rockcastle and Woodford.

The biggest discrepancies were in Boyd, which showed a 12-vote gain for Wheeler, and Johnson, which showed a 10-point loss for Napier.

"Maybe I picked up 15 votes here, lost 10 there, but it's over. She's won, and I commend her," Napier said.

He continues to be thankful for the support he received. "They say it's the closest race in a statewide race ever - isn't that something? We had an awful lot of support," Napier said.

For now, he'll settle down and continue his legislative duties, he added.

Wheeler's total tally was 54,612, twelve votes less than originally reported. Napier's tally was 53,505, five votes more than originally reported.

Fugate said the state Board of Elections is scheduled to meet June 11, when it is expected to certify the results from the 2007 primary election.
