Letter: Tax increases questioned

June 14, 2007

Dear Editor,

It may be time for a strong dose of reality. The Danville City Commission is raising the payroll tax - again - and garbage collection fees.

Maybe the people of Boyle County don't mind having their garbage collection fees raised, but I am against the payroll tax increase. I don't live in Boyle County, but I do work in Danville. I don't get any benefit from a payroll tax increase. All I get is less money to take home.

I think it is time for the people of Boyle County to question the leadership of Boyle County. When was the last time that good paying jobs were brought into Boyle County? What are the leaders of Boyle County currently doing to bring new revenue into the county? Besides taking more money from all of us, what are the leaders of Boyle County doing to cut waste in the county? What have the leaders of Boyle County done to stop new revenue from coming into the county?

The last time there was a payroll tax increase it was reported that 60 percent of the people who work in Boyle County do not live in Boyle County. Why should people who don't live in Boyle County pay taxes just to work in the county? Why do we have to pay just for the "privilege" of working in Boyle County? After all, those of us that work in the Boyle County but don't live in the county help stimulate the economy of Boyle County by spending our money at local businesses.

Perhaps it is time for the people who live in Boyle County but work outside Boyle County to start paying payroll tax to Boyle County. At least those people would benefit from the tax.

Maybe it is time for Boyle County to elect responsible leadership. Maybe some leadership with innovative ideas that will help Boyle County.
