Profitt field growing as tee-time nears

June 14, 2007|Nancy Leedy

Kevin Lawson, the 2006 Homer Profitt Invitational champion, will be back at Dix River Country Club Saturday looking to defend his title.

Lawson of Stanton walked away with a one-stroke win last year, shooting a five-under-par 137 (69-68). Scott Bolin of Lancaster, the 2005 champion, finished one-stroke back of Lawson with a 138.

Lawson and Bolin are two of 85 golfers currently signed up to play Saturday and Sunday in the 36-hole tournament.

While many slots are available in the 27th annual Profitt event, tournament director Jack Upchurch, expects a full field by tee time.

"It's like that most years," he said. "It's coming along pretty good. Everybody waits and then the weekend before and the week of the tournament, they start coming in."

Upchurch had set Wednesday as a deadline for entry, allowing him time to break the entrants down by handicap to set the tee times.

Four former champions are counted among the 85 already signed up with Marty Anderson and Phil Hendrickson joining Lawson and Bolin in the Profitt field. Hendrickson is coming off a win in the J. E. Butler Memorial at Danville Country Club.

"We've got a strong field of players already signed up. We've got several players with 0, 1 and 2 handicaps," Upchurch said. "We've got Kevin Lawson back, Scott Bolin, Marty Anderson, Phillip Hendrickson, all former champions. Chris Cornelius and Chris Davis are both playing real well."

"We're expecting it to be another good tournament," he said.

The first of the Profitt golfers will tee off at 7:30 a.m. Saturday morning with a succession of golfers following suit.

Despite a prediction of clear skies, rain dampened last year's tournament. Clear skies are predicted for this weekend. Is Upchurch concerned?

"Clear skies are always better but we've played in the rain before," he said. "As long as there's no lightning, we're going to play."
