Guns, marijuana, cash confiscated after Forkland investigation

FORKLAND - A domestic violence call to a remote farm led Boyle County deputies to an indoor and outdoor marijuana growing operation.

Danny Holt, 60, of 522 Curtis Road, remains lodged in the Boyle County Detention Center this morning under a $45,000 bond. He was arrested Monday night at his residence on drug, gun and assault charges. Additional federal charges may be pending.

Deputy Brian Wofford said he arrived at the residence, located on a ridgetop near the end of Curtis Road, about 7:30 p.m. Monday and saw a woman leaving the barn area with a hammer. She appeared to have been hit in the face, and Holt was charged with fourth-degree assault, Wofford said.

While making the arrest, deputies noticed grow lights in plain view on the porch and used that information to obtain a search warrant, Wofford said.

The search turned up more growing equipment such as high-powered bulbs and electric scales, plant food, between $20,000 and $30,000 in cash and "an enormous amount of seeds," Wofford said.

Also recovered were three rifles, two shotguns and a pistol, leading Holt to be charged with six counts of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Holt was sentenced to six years in prison in 1994 on cocaine trafficking charges, Boyle County court records show.

Deputies secured the residence overnight Monday and called in Kentucky State Police and federal agents to continue searching Holt's property on Tuesday. Wofford said authorities had information that there were thousands of marijuana plants on Holt's farm.

Agents with the Drug Enforcement Agency and Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms were on the scene Tuesday morning. DEA conducted an aerial search by helicopter while deputies used four-wheelers for a ground search. Only nine maturing marijuana plants were discovered growing in a fence row, Wofford said.

Sheriff LeeRoy Hardin said this morning that he was waiting to hear from federal authorities today to learn if any federal drug- or gun-related charges will be issued against Holt.
