Big summer for Rose, local golfers

West Jessamine High School senior Ashlee Rose and other local golfers are staying busy this summer.

Rose is currently vying for a win at the 77th Women's Trans National Golf Association Championship at Persimmon Ridge Golf Club in Louisville.

After round two of competition Tuesday, Rose was in tenth place after shooting a 75, which followed a 76 on Monday. The leader was Caney Hines of San Antonio, Texas, with a two-day total of 145.

Rose was tied with fellow Kentuckian Marci Turner of Tompkinsville, and the two trailed Mallory Blackwelder of Versailles.

The tournament draws competitors from all over the world and two Australians are in the top 10.

Rose teed off Wednesday at 12:30 in the first round of match play with 63 other women. If she advances, Rose will compete with 31 others tomorrow before the field is narrowed to 16 by Thursday. Quarter and semifinals are Friday, with the finals on Saturday.

Later in July, Rose will head back to Kansas for the First Tee qualifier and try to make it to The First Tee Open in Pebble Beach again. She competed there last fall as one of only 22 other girls.

Also, Fred Meyer, Sloane Sinner, Betsie Johnson, Whitney Deaton, Ethan Johnson and Nate Johnson teed off Wednesday in the 2007 Kentucky Junior Amateur Wednesday. The girls compete at Bardstown Country Club, and the boys at Lindsey Golf Course and Pine Valley Golf Club.
