Immigration forum to be held Saturday

The Jessamine County Republican Party quarterly meeting will be held at the Nicholasville Golden Corral on Saturday, July 14.

Breakfast sign-in opens at 8 a.m., and a public discussion will be held on immigration beginning at 9 a.m.

Matt Hisle, chairman of the Jessamine County Republican Party, said immigration issues are important.

"A lot of people are talking about immigration and specifically illegal immigration," he said. "It's clearly a key issue. But we also need to look at developing an overall immigration policy. We as a nation have to decide; do we want more people coming in, and if so, how many and what type?"

Hisle said it may be beneficial to allow immigrants to come into the county on a "special skills" visa, which will bring more specialized laborers into the United States.

Hisle said it may be worth thinking about abolishing visa waivers, which means that people who are from a certain group of European countries don't need visas as long as they have a passport.

"The thing is that we can't track those people once they enter the country, and there has been a lot of terrorist activity in some of those countries, especially England," Hisle said.

The ideas that come out of the forum will be submitted to designated representatives for their consideration.
