Boyle teen elected to state 4-H position

Though teenager Gretta Gooch is just a senior in high school, she is no stranger to being a leader. Her list of leadership positions seems miles long.

This summer, Gooch added another position to that list.

On June 12, Gooch was elected to be the secretary of the Kentucky 4-H Teen Council, a position she will hold for a year.

In addition to her new position, Gooch also acts as president of the Boyle County 4-H Teen Club, reporter for the livestock club and member of the Boyle County 4-H Council - and those are only her leadership positions as part of 4-H.

Gooch's road to becoming state secretary was a long one. She began planning for her campaign long before the conference.

"In March, I sent in an application for the position. In April, I was interviewed and the committee slated me for a campaign. In April and June, I started getting my campaign stuff together," Gooch said.

Then, on June 11 and 12 at the 4-H Teen Conference in Lexington, Gooch campaigned for her position among 4-H members from clubs throughout the state.

Gooch was honored to be chosen for one of four positions in the state 4-H office, she said.

As secretary of the state 4-H, Gooch will help plan next year's 4-H Teen Conference. She also will make appearances at 4-H meetings across the state, visit livestock shows, help review educational materials for teens, and assist with the Kentucky Teen Summit for junior 4-H members.

"It's going to be a lot of work, but I'm excited about it," she said.
